Haiyan Rehabilitation Support for Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro Carried Out Through Skills Enhancement
Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro - Sixty (60) victims of supertyphoon Haiyan (Local name: Yolanda) in Barangay Balatasan, municipality of Bulalacao in Oriental Mindoro were trained in basic carpentry skills to aid in the rebuilding of community infrastructures and the victims' own homes. The municipality of Bulalacao, though not in the direct path of the super-typhoon, is one of the hardest-hit municipalities in the province but experienced much less impact than North Palawan.

MFI Haiyan Rehabilitation Support in North Palawan Starts with Building Skills Enhancement
Coron, Palawan - Malampaya Foundation Inc.'s (MFI) rehabilitation assistance in Coron commenced with training able-bodied males in basic carpentry and building skills to aid in the proper rehabilitation and repair of infrastructures such as homes, schools, day care centers, boats and other community structures. The rehabilitation project is being conducted as part of MFI's Sanayan sa Ikauunlad ng Kaalamang Pangkabuhayan (SIKAP) program.

MFI Brings SHORE to Isla Verde
The first on-location Shoreline Communities Onwards to Resiliency (SHORE) training was brought to Isla Verde, an island off Batangas city and Oriental Mindoro, to capacitate the island-dwellers in responding to coastline and ocean-related emergencies as the residents have done on many occasions in the past. Malampaya Foundation (MFI) Bridging Employment through Skills Training (BEST) graduates of piping insulation pipefitting were immediately employed upon successful completion of their skills training in Batangas last April 2013. The 30 pipe fitters were trained at Concept Institute for Career Enhancement Inc., while the 30 piping insulators trained at Batangas Association for Guaranteed Metal Craft and Engineering Technology.

More COTs Extraction Undertaken, This time in Linapacan
Linapacan eco-divers and MFI collected more crown of thorns starfish (COTs) at Pical reef, Linapacan in mid-April during a survey dive. Some 550 COTs were reportedly extracted by the recently-certified Reef Watch Team of Linapacan established by MFI with support from Reef Check Philippines.

SHORE-Trained Volunteers Rescue Distressed Boat Passengers
MFI's SHORE-trained Bantay Dagat Rescue Team volunteers from San Agustin Silangan, Isla Verde, Batangas City rescued eight (8) distressed passengers of a capsized boat in Batangas Bay last March 28. Strong winds and waves caused the capsizing, throwing the passengers into tempestuous waters.
MFI and Taytay Community Reef Watch Team collect COTs from Rakit Rakit Reef
Malampaya Foundation, Taytay Eco Divers and Reef Check Philippines collected three cratefuls of Crown-of-Thorns (COT) starfish (Acanthaster planci) at the Rakit Rakit reef in west Taytay, site of the Malampaya Sound Protected Landscape and Seascape in Palawan. The COT infestation was discovered during a survey dive to carry out an assessment of the reefs in the core zone of the protected area by the Reef Watch Team for Taytay recently established by Malampaya Foundation with support from Reef Check Philippines.

The formation of the Oriental Mindoro Reef Watch Team equips the province with competent community-based reef and species assessment team members to effectively monitor the status of the habitats and its inhabitants on a regular basis.
