Malampaya Foundation recently teamed up with the U.S. Peace Corps and the Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro for the establishment of a province-wide Reef Watch Team. The formation of the Oriental Mindoro Reef Watch Team equips the province with competent community-based reef and species assessment team members to effectively monitor the status of the habitats and its inhabitants on a regular basis.
The initiative is part of a wider program for the conservation of the Verde Island Passage led by the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Training on habitat and species assessment was conducted by Reef Check Philippines in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro on February 19-23, 2013.
