Puerto Princesa, Palawan - Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) and Western Philippines University (WPU) formally inaugurated on April 15, 2015 the upgraded and expanded hatchery and marine station of WPU in Binduyan, Puerto Princesa.
The university hatchery is being utilised by MFI for its marine biodiversity program Barangay Aquatic Habitat and Underwater Regeneration Assistance (BAHURA) program for conservation restocking, livelihood and research purposes. Species currently being spawned and bred at the hatchery are abalone and tectus niloticus trochus shells.
Envisioned to improve the production capacity, the hatchery’s upgrade included new facilities such as additional rearing building, new fiberglass and concrete tanks, seawater reservoir, water pump and other essential equipment.
Representing MFI were MFI Trustee Dr. Edgardo Gomez, Executive Director Karen Agabin and Palawan Manager Bonifacio Tobias. Representing WPU were Vice President for Research Dr. Benjamin Gonzales and Dean for Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Dr. Lota Creencia.
