Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro — The twelfth marine protected area (MPA) station built by Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) with local government and community partners was turned-over and inaugurated yesterday, June 18, 2019, with Puerto Galera mayor Rocky Ilagan and MFI chairman Rufino Bomasang leading the ceremony.
The MPA station is located within the four-hectare Puerto Galera Mangrove Walkway Park which is a protected area and has become a favorite tourist destination in the municipality. The station will be used by the MPA’s bantay dagats, visiting researchers and tourists alike.
The 370-meter walkway was built through a partnership between the Oriental Mindoro provincial government, MFI, barangays Dulangan and Tabinay and the Canadian embassy. With 13 mangrove species, scientific/educational billboards may be found throughout the length of the walkway.
