Coron, Palawan — The local government of Coron, bgy Lajala, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Calamianes and Malampaya Foundation (MFI) inaugurated on February 16, 2017 the much-awaited solar-powered, level 3 water system for the island barangay of Lajala in Coron.
The community water system is an outcome of a partnership and counter-parting of Coron local government, bgy Lajala community, Calamianes DILG and MFI which included masonry and plumbing trainings for community members, establishment of a management and collection system, technical support and materials provision. Donations from the United States initiated by Palawan-local Albert Balmonte likewise contributed to the building of the valuable community water infrastructure.
An efficient water system has long been a need and clamour by the island barangay, which became more urgent in the aftermath of Yolanda in the year-end of 2013. DILG Calamianes has committed to expanding the water system to other parts of the island. The community-based water system is complemented with a watershed management area located in the vicinity of the infrastructure likewise managed by the community.
