El Nido, Palawan — Nearly four days of strong habagat-borne rains combined with high-tides caused severe flooding in different parts of El Nido on July 28-29, 2018, including the town center and areas close to rivers, resulting to some areas going underwater in more than one meter-deep floods.
The calamity prompted the local government to launch a relief drive to affected families in several barangays, which several civic organizations, including Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI), supported through the provision of cloth bags, canned food and manpower to assist in packing the relief packs.
In addition to relief goods, MFI provided members of its conservation partner people’s organizations in barangays Bucana and San Fernando rehabilitation of their damaged livelihoods such as farms and animal-raising enterprise. Damaged crops and death of livestock were commonly experienced by farmers in low-lying and coastal areas. MFI’s rehabilitation support were provided in the form of farm inputs such as materials and juvenile livestock.
