El Nido, Palawan — Malampaya Foundation (MFI), in partnership with the Protected Area Offices of the Malampaya Sound Protected Area Landscape and Seascape, the El Nido-Taytay Managed Protected Area with the respective local governments of Taytay and El Nido kicked off on February 8, 2017 a series of management and enforcement gap analysis workshops aimed at improving management and enforcement in the National Parks.
Gaps and challenges comprised discussions in the first days of the workshop, which include conflicting policies, management and jurisdiction overlaps, continuing illegal activities within the protected areas, limited enforcement capacities and many other challenges confronting the parks. Realistic solutions were identified by the participants which aim to enjoin the wider community and stakeholders within the areas.
The series of capacity-building and harmonisation workshops for the two national parks will continue further into the year as part of MFI's commitment to providing assistance to the improvement of protected areas’ management, in close coordination with its management bodies.
