Coral Nurseries poised for rehabilitation of blasted reefs in eight MFI marine conservation sites

Oriental Mindoro and North Palawan — Coral nurseries established in eight of Malampaya Foundation Inc.’s (MFI) conservation sites in Oriental Mindoro and Northern Palawan are now poised for rehabilitation of severely damaged reefs mainly caused by blast fishing, anchor damage and marine pollution.

The community-based nurseries were established and are maintained by MFI with community volunteer divers, partner community organisations and barangay through bayanihan.

The fixed modular tray and fixed rope nurseries hold diverse coral species mostly branching, tabular and a few massive, sub-massive, foliose and encrusting species, installed inside protected zones of marine protected areas.
