Taytay, Palawan—A conservation enterprise project was formally inaugurated yesterday at barangay Banbanan in Taytay, Palawan by the barangay local government, Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) and its community conservation partner Samahan sa Pangkaunlaran ng Banbanan (SAPAKABA).
The enterprise project, a rice milling facility, is operated and run by SAPAKABA, a people’s organization comprised of farmer-fishers and their wives. Banbanan community is located within the Malampaya Protected Landscape and Seascape, a National Integrated Protected Area Systems site under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The DENR, MFI, Bgy Banbanan and SAPAKABA initially signed a conservation agreement in June 2016 to foster partnership in protecting and managing established marine management zones fronting the community, as well as planting and nurturing upland watershed areas.
The enterprise project contributes to direct conservation efforts via the allocation of percentage from its net profits for the community’s conservation activities.
