Community-based coral nursery established in Linapacan

Linapacan, Palawan - A community-based coral nursery was established in barangay San Miguel, Linapacan in north Palawan by Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) and its conservation partners in the community—the San Miguel MPA Mgmt Council, volunteer ecodivers and members of the Tarabedan Producers Cooperative.

Fixed modular tray and fixed rope nurseries were established, each holding diverse coral species mostly branching, tabular and a few massive, sub-massive, foliose and encrusting species. Species included were Acropora, Montipora, Polcillopora, Pavona, Porites, Heliopora and others.

The nursery is part of the rehabilitation of severely degraded reef areas in Linapacan damaged by illegal methods of fishing, pollution and severe weather.
