Batangas City, Batangas — Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) turned over on February 23, 2018 to the Verde Island Sanctuary Management Board (VISMB) safety gears for use by volunteer Bantay Dagats (sea rangers) while patrolling and guarding their sanctuary.

An NGO member of the board, MFI supported the re-activation in 2017 of the VISMB to provide appropriate governance in the protection of the island’s sanctuary which is currently in the process of expansion from 1.1 to 100+ hectares.

Verde Island or Isla Verde is located in the heart of the Verde Island Passage (VIP), deemed the "center of center of marine shore fish biodiversity in the world”. The island’s marine sanctuary is home to the dive site Pulong Bato, popular among diver tourists from Puerto Galera.

MFI signed a conservation in March 2016 with Verde Island's Barangay San Agapito, Batangas City local government and community organisation to implement a marine biodiversity conservation-coastal resource management program with the community’s inhabitants.
